The Conjuring 2 is a 2016 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan and written by Carey Hayes, Chad Hayes, Wan and David Leslie Johnson. It is a sequel to the 2013 film The Conjuring and part of The Conjuring Universe. Concerned about her daughter's behavior following a fall from a window that causes Janet to be hospitalized, Peggy calls upon renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren to assess the situation. While Janet initially seems to recover, she then becomes possessed by the spirit of a former resident of the home. Peggy's friend Julie discovers that the house was formerly inhabited by an occultist in the 1930s who conducted black magic rituals with his followers in the basement. The Warrens' investigations reveal that the house was built on land previously occupied by a leper colony, and is now situated over a gateway to Hell. Ed senses the presence of powerful demon spirits, including Bathsheba, an ancient spirit with malice toward men, and Valak, a demon that takes on inhuman form. While Julie is talking to Janet at the hospital cafeteria, she is possessed by Bathsheba after viewing an illustration of her in an occult book. Peggy is alerted to the presence of spirits and is attacked, but she fends off her attackers and is committed to a psychiatric hospital. Peggy's husband Don (D'Onofrio) attempts to contact the spirit of Bathsheba using a ouija board, but she attacks him and Janet with an iron; Janet recovers physically but becomes mute, while Don suffers from spiritual possession and is taken to the hospital. Billy is then targeted by Valak, who uses his body as a vessel for physical interaction with others. Valak later possesses John and frames him for Peggy's death during an attempt to kill her in the hospital. Don, who is fading due to the failures of a suicide attempt, is visited by his deceased son James (Henstridge), who tells him that he can find a way to stop Valak's possession of John. James' spirit makes contact with Janet and convinces her to tell her parents the location of the entity possessing them. The family searches for a secret room beneath the house with clues as to how it might be accessed, but they are captured by Valak and taken into darkness.
